If you’re dreaming about a laid-back engagement session with breathtaking views and a sunset that literally paints the sky, you need to see Jodi and Ryan’s engagement session at Canyon Lake.

This winter shoot had it all: a little adventure, a lot of romance, and a cotton candy sunset that showed off the best of the Texas Hill Country.

A couple stands on a rocky shore, facing a calm lake at sunset. The man kisses the woman on the forehead as they hold hands, with an island and distant houses visible across the water.

Winter Sunset Vibes at Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake is one of my all-time favorite spots for engagement photos — and Jodi and Ryan showed exactly why.

They wanted a location that felt romantic and natural without relying too much on seasonal colors. The lake’s deep blues and the evergreen landscape made it a perfect year-round choice.

Even better? February gifted us one of the most insane sunsets I’ve seen — all pinks, purples, and golds. Comfortable temps, no crowds, and glowing skies… yes, please.

A Little Scramble, A Lot of Magic

Fun twist to the day — our original meeting spot was closed for the season (gotta love Texas park schedules 😅), so we had to pivot fast. We found a new lakeside trail that required a little bit of a hike, but honestly, it worked out even better than planned.

Jodi and Ryan rolled with it like champs, wearing big smiles and full trust in the process — my dream kind of couple.

As the sun dropped below the horizon, we stayed out a little longer to play with some nighttime shots, leaning into the dramatic colors and the calm, quiet of the lake after dark.

Favorite Moments From Their Canyon Lake Engagement Session

  • Romantic lakeside cuddles right at sunset
  • Playful candid moments hiking to the new spot
  • Glowy golden hour portraits with the lake behind them
  • Nighttime silhouettes with the cotton candy sky fading out
  • Intimate, organic laughs and kisses that felt totally effortless

📸 When’s the Best Time to Schedule Engagement Photos in Texas?

If you’re wondering about the best season for your Texas engagement session, here’s the real deal:

Winter and early spring (December–March) can be amazing. You get:

  • Comfortable temperatures (no 100-degree days!)
  • Fewer crowds at popular spots
  • Super crisp, colorful sunsets
  • Greenery at places like Canyon Lake that doesn’t rely on seasonal blooms

Fall is another great option if you want golden tones, but don’t sleep on a winter engagement session — the light and the skies are absolutely worth it.
